PRAGUE Art and Culture of Central Europe
From Gothic and Fin-de-siècle to Modern and Contemporary Practice
The Prague Studio Program
The student will spend six weeks of intensive research and studio work in the heart of Europe. The first two weeks will provide an introduction to the culture, art, and history of Central Europe beginning in Vienna and then moving to Prague. These two weeks will concentrate on museum visits, architectural walks, lectures, seminars, and in general getting acquainted with the cities and the cultures. The rest of the program, which means nearly the full month of July, will be devoted to intensive studio work in the magnificent studios of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
The students will work mainly on independent studio projects derived in part from the experiences gained in the first two weeks, but under the supervision and mentoring of local Czech artists and visiting faculty from SAIC. The studios at the Academy will be available 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday for essentially the entire month of July. There will still be lectures, artists’ talks and studios visits, and occasional excursions out of Prague on the weekends during this period. However most of the time will be for independent research and studio work.
This program concludes with a final public student exhibition in the Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
The program is led by Adjunct Professor of Painting and Drawing Richard Willenbrink, Residence Director in Prague.
